February 13 Meeting Notes

Discussion: Memberships, led by Wade Joos
If you've renewed, you got your card tonight. If you didn't get your card tonight, figure out why you haven't renewed.

Discussion: Airfield, led by Steve Wilson

  1. Looking at Geo Mat for runway
  2. 3 possible runway directions: SWW/NEE: 795 feet. SW/NE: 917 feet. S/N: 540 feet.
  3. Questions regarding prevailing wind directions
  4. Steve W. advanced the idea of putting down a "binder" on the ground which might serve as a good runway. Often used on infields to hold down the dirt, but requires regular maintenance.
  5. Also: Bring in engineered fill and roll it. Used in Evanston's R/C airport.
  6. Discussed bringing in water for a pond
  7. Discussed where to have a dedicated heli/3D area. We have 20 acres and are only using 11.
  8. Rubber stuff only lasts 4 years or so
  9. Best thing might be to roll it and put down Magnesium Chloride. Would require annual maintenance.
  10. Many are in favor of gravel for parking area.
  11. Randy suggested moving everything from being centered in the lot to slightly to the West. This seemed to have the popular support of the club, with a good deal of shouting that helis are just going to become more popular and we need to accommodate them.
  12. Evan suggested putting a bridge to the southeast for helicopters to fly in the next field to the south.
  13. Public events will continue be located at the Jordan Modelport due to liability concerns.
  14. Where you see the stick, be careful of the ditch on the approach. We're going to improve that this summer to make the bridge wider. Widening the bridge is a high priority
  15. Priorities: Surface work, bridge repair, and establishing flying patterns.
  16. We have a budget to do something decent, but we need to use the field to figure out the soonest challenges.
  17. Outhouse is $800/yr, field is $1500/yr. Outhouse will be emptied every two weeks.
  18. Evan is getting pricing on gravel for parking. Going price seems to be 20c to 40c a sq yd for 3" pack, or $15.00 a ton.
  19. Road work looks like a high priority.
  20. GeoMat lasted (atleast) 5 years without seeming to need to be replaced for Bob in Dallas TX. Occasionally someone would stick a prop in it and cut it. They stored spare out there with shears and a caulk gun with silicon sealant. There were several patches in it from pilots who had to fix botched landings. It's actually a very fine mesh, not solid. Turns from black to gray over the years. 80c sq yd, we'd need about 6-8 rolls.
  21. If we go with Geo Mat, we really need to make sure our surface prep is top-notch before rolling it out. That was Bob's chief complaint with his previous runway: it was still bumpy due to poor surface prep beneath the mat.

Discussion: Pilot shelter

  1. Several ideas were tossed out
  2. Galvanized metal roofs are not an option due to the corrosive nature of the salt.
  3. Fiberglass is not preferred due to high winds which occasionally blow through the area.
  4. Lots of argument about how to keep the building straight.
  5. Mentioned it might be built for $250-$300 per 8x12 unit, with several 8x12 units.

Matt mentioned the NURCAC and UVA pylon races this summer, then we had some show & tell.
