Ute Airpark conditions: 2007-02-17

This afternoon, I stopped by the airpark to determine its flight-worthiness. Here's my report:

Entrance to the field is clear of snow, and is very drive-able even by a sedan. There is little concern driving onto the field. However, down near the clubhouse the field is still pretty wet and muddy. My tires were caked, and it was obvious that at least one of us had gotten a little stuck and had peeled out. I reckon I wasn't the first guy to check out the field this weekend :)

Anyway, I would not recommend flying from the field yet. It's just too soggy at the moment. I don't think any car with a reasonable tread on it will get stuck, but the mud cakes on clothes, shoes, and tires.

On the other hand, just 15 minutes south is the Tooele City Municipal Airport, which I flew with Randy tonight. Just head south on Highway 36 until you reach Vine street (about 10 miles or 15 minutes). Take a right on Vine and follow it until it ends, then remember "left right left": turn left, take the first right, and then the first left again. The road will end at a bit of gravel which you drive across, and then you're on the runway. I usually park about 1000 feet south to go flying, right by the big "X" marking the runway as "don't land full-scale aircraft here". Remember not to over-fly the houses! We have never had any complaints, but you never know. During the summer, I make sure to chop down a few weeds every time I go, and often bring a push-broom to clear away any gravel which may have accumulated, as the runway is no longer maintained.

Tonight was cool because at the TCMA we had four people drop by: one jogger, a father & son pair, and one kid who lives in the neighborhood. It's always nice to draw attention to the aircraft and get interest from kids!
