New guy looking...

Hello,

My name is Trevor and I came across this site while researching RC planes. I use to fly about 10 years ago as a kid, I am now pushing 27 and have the "bug" as it were, to get back into the RC plane scene.

I have read that you club offers free flight lessons to club members. I have also read that one must be a member of the AMA in order to fly at your field and others in the valley.

I am not sure if I want to make a full commitment yet, and invest ~100 bucks into membership dues at this point.

I am looking, however for advise on a trainer if I so progress to that point, where by I would love to join the club to take advantage of the flight lessons, but unsure of the AMA fees as of yet, a mentioned, not sure I want to invest fully into a hobby I may not continue with.

Does your club offer introductory flight lessons for a reduced charge on perhaps a club trainer, before I make the commitment to spend the money on a plane and field equipment of my own?

Thank you for your help!

free training

Hi Trevor, I'm fairly new in the club myself.
The club offers free training on Wednesday nights at the Jordan Modelport. You don't need to be a club member to participate and a few guys providing the training will have their planes available if you don't have one yourself.

What is the address of that

I remember that park from when I use to fly, about 10 years ago!

I have found a NexStar that I am very interested in.

So if I show up then I can still get free training? I would join just as soon as i get my own plane and equipment.

Yes, 2200 North

Yes, just take the 2200 North exit of I-215 in Salt Lake. Head East, and the road will bend South. The OHV park and modelport are the first left after the exit.

Flight training is every Wednesday night, starting at 5:00 and running until sunset through October. We generally have 2-5 guys there willing to train. Bring your plane, transmitter, fuel, starter, glow igniter, $4 for park admission, and make sure your batteries are fully-charged. The NextStar includes a limited version of the RealFlight simulator that you can use to practice before you show up. 2-4 hours of practice taking off and landing your airplane in the simulator will translate to hundreds of dollars worth of repairs you won't have to do :)

No need to join the club to get training or fly at that field. If you purchase a Utah Parks Pass, you can get into the Jordan Modelport for free. It's slated for demolition some time in the next year or two, though, and unless we succeed in our attempts to establish a new public flying field, the closest glow-engine-friendly field will be the our private field in Lakepoint, thirty minutes from the Salt Lake airport.

We'd sure love to have you come find out more about the club, though. You'll be in good company with a several other recent members who have found the club through the web site.

Not everybody who shows up for training has their own plane. If you don't bring one, though, it may be hit-or-miss as to whether the club members doing the training will have a spare aircraft and transmitter to train you on. If you bring one, though, they'll do a great job getting it trimmed and ready for a successful flight.

Thank you for the great

Thank you for the great information!

Sad to hear that the field might not be there in the near future.

I look forward to meeting you all and I really hope I can make it out this Wednesday after I get off work.

Thank you again.
